RC (Radio Controlled) Racing: Electric, Nitro And Drag Racing

RC racing exists in a variety of forms. For each type of radio controlled device, you can be sure there are racers somewhere competing against each other. RC racing airplanes fly through pylons, boats go around miniature buoys, and then we come to cars. Cars can race on-road and off-road depending on the particular type of car or truck. There are also different classes for size, engine type and fuel type.

RC racing for cars can take place on any type of surface, even indoors. Sometimes, especially during the winter, a carpet track is not only desirable but mandatory due to the weather. Most types of RC racing will begin with a practice session for the driver to get familiar with the track and allow some time for you to set up a pit (some races will let you work on your car after a round, others will make you leave it on the radio table). If you are driving an electric car, be sure to put in a fresh battery for the first race after the practice round. The same would go for a nitro or gasoline powered car–be sure to fill up your tank unless you have calculated exactly how much fuel you will need to finish the race and are looking to minimize weight.

When racing around a track, be sure to note trouble spots of congestion and where you have problems driving. You will especially want to be weary of these places when RC racing with other drivers out there. Also, don't cut off a car that is lapping you.  If they are lapping you, their car is obviously faster than yours. Do not risk damaging either car and incurring a penalty, let the other driver by.

RC racing can be done in a drag racing format as well. A drag race track will need at least 300 feet of length, 132 for the actual race and at least 150 for the shutdown area. This track will need to be at least 20 feet wide and have an automated timing system incorporated into it. All together, setting one of these courses up yourself can be pretty expensive. It is best to check out a website to find a place with an RC track near you where you can go to race (visit http://www.rccaraction.com/info/rctrack_srch.asp).

RC racing is popular for both nitro powered cars and electric cars. There should be no shortage of fellow hobbyists who would undoubtedly want to race against you. If you can't find any in your area, gather your friends interested in the hobby and form your own races. RC racing is fun for all ages and is a great way to get out and meet new people while showing them your competitive edge.
