RC Cars (Radio Controlled Cars): Nitro, Gas And Hobby

By:

Published: December 6, 2006

One of the most popular hobbies of the '80's and '90's is attempting to regain some momentum for the new century. Radio controlled machines are on the comeback. Everything from planes, boats, helicopters, monster trucks, buggies and race cars are available at retail stores and the internet. You can buy a car already put together or you can order a car kit to assemble the car yourself.

Different companies sell different types of RC cars.  RC cars come with different types of power sources. You can choose from electric, nitro or gas powered engines. Gas powered cars are usually larger and more expensive than other cars. Gas powered RC car advocates usually cite that gasoline is cheaper than nitro per use that the price is worth it over time.

Why even buy an engine powered by a combustible material? Nitro and gas cars perform similarly when it comes to quickness and top speed, while it seems that battery powered RC cars don't have what it takes for racing on courses or the straight away. Batteries must always be fully charged for the best results. Make sure to bring more than one battery if you plan on driving your car for a while. It takes a few hours to charge an electric battery and could ruin your day if you lose charge and don't have another battery. Both gas and nitro cars can be refilled on the spot. As long as you don't run out of fuel, these cars can drive all day and night.

If you are interested in purchasing a larger, gas powered RC car to fuel the need for a hobby, make sure you are actually looking at gasoline powered cars. A lot of nitro powered cars are advertised as gas powered, which is acceptable because actual gasoline powered cars are relatively new to the market.

RC cars come in innumerable shapes, sizes and types. Whether you are looking to make some tracks in the sand or dirt with a buggy, to burn rubber on city streets or parking lots with a street car, to pop wheelies and crush smaller cars with a monster truck, or something more eclectic, manufacturers offer enough customization options and other styling features for you to find exactly what you are looking for.

RC cars are good for simply having fun outdoors or indoors, but RC cars can also be raced on a competitive level. Look for postings on the internet or in your local hobby shop for RC car races in your area. Track and drag racing is also very popular. Drag racing RC cars can easily get up to 80 mph. Even though these cars are small, they can appease anyone's need for speed.
