Fastest RC Cars: Street Fast, Nitro, Electic And World's Fastest

Nowadays, watching RC cars race involves hearing the zoom of small engines, feeling sudden gusts of wind at your legs, and seeing only blurs when they go at their fastest speeds. That's because the record for fastest RC car in the world has been pushed to extremes; the current record holder's RC car goes faster than 130 mph. In fact, the sub-culture of RC cars consists heavily of racing and mechanical work to improve speeds. To no surprise, speed demons are attracted in droves to the adrenaline rush of being able to navigate these fast and furious RC cars at ultra-fast speeds and not be arrested. As a result, the question of which RC cars are fastest is a hot topic among RC car enthusiasts.

Finding out which RC cars are fastest means first checking which cars have made records for speed. In 2006, Nic Case modified Team Associated's Nitro TC-3 RC car to the point where it could reach 134.4 mph, making it the fastest RC car in the world. The electrically-powered car's engine can spin at 54,000 rpm and runs on 24 Reedy NiCD batteries. Even though the Nitro TC3 was modified to reach its impressive speed, unmodified the model is still capable of speeds over 40 mph.

Both second and third place record holding RC cars are electrically-powered. One is an L3 Oval Racer and the other an L3 Oval Racer2, clocked at 111 mph and 105 mph respectively. These RC cars were modified yet like the Nitro TC-3 their unmodified versions are capable of speeds over 40 mph.

It would seem that electrically-powered cars are the fastest and, indeed, RC car aficionados agree that their lightweight body frames are more conducive to speed. Not only do experts also agree that electric RC cars are generally faster for short-term, level-surfaced races, many agree that they're best for novices because of their low maintenance and cheaper prices, which average from $70 to $200. Yet there's one other type of RC car which, some would say, is the faster RC car in certain driving conditions.

The alternative to electric power for RC cars is fuel. For off-road, unleveled-surfaced races many say that fuel-powered cars are better. One advantage is, unlike electrically-powered cars, they don't have to be recharged every sixty to ninety minutes, which ensures more driving time. Clearly, this is an advantage especially in long races where no one can afford sudden immobility. Fuel-powered RC cars are specially made to run on inexpensive nitro or gasoline fuel. The fuels provide energy for longer time intervals than batteries, which makes many agree that they're better performers in off-road races.

Also, unlike their electrically-powered counterparts, fuel-powered cars can reach impressive speeds unmodified. While unmodified models of electric cars reach around 40 mph on average, fuel car models such as the Ford GT Nitro or the Nitro RC Buggy can achieve speeds of over 75 mph. Likewise, the fuel-powered Nitro RC Lotus can reach speeds in excess of 55 mph. This possibly accounts for their higher price; on average, they cost anywhere from $200 to $1,000. Yet these cars prove that, although electric cars have a higher capability for speed after modification, fuel cars are generally the faster cars out-of-the-box.

In retrospect, determining which RC car is fastest is a dubious task. The fastest depends on whether judgment is based on speed out-of-the-box or by the speed a car can be modified to go. Ultimately, how "street fast " a car is, meaning how fast it goes on leveled-surfaces, and how fast it can go on off-road surfaces must be considered. Meanwhile, expect speed records to rise as devoted racers pour money and time into their RC cars.
