Radio Controlled/ RC Airplanes: Model Airplanes, Gas, Electric And RTF

Among the many hobbyists in the world there are few who are as avid as those who collect model airplanes. The people who collect model airplanes can paint them, personalize them to their tastes, or show them off at model airplane shows. However, there is one type of model airplanes that exceeds the rest when it comes to entertainment and excitement. These are the model airplanes that are known as RC Airplanes, which is short for radio controlled airplanes.

These RC Airplanes are really quite an invention. They are airplanes that can fly in the air all while being radio controlled on the ground from a person operating a radio transmitter. The airplane has a receiver inside of it that controls the direction the plane flies, the maneuvers it makes, and the speed that it flies at. The receiver is controlled from the joystick of the person operating the transmitter. It is a simple system and once a person is trained in flying these RC Airplanes, they can marvel at the twists and turns of an airplane that is many feet in the air above them and know that they are controlling it with their own hands.

There are two main types of Radio Controlled Airplanes. There are those that are gas powered and those that are run through electric engines. Gas powered RC Airplanes use an engine inside the powerplant, or the place where the energy source is stored. The motor runs on a lubricant based gas that contains methanol and nitromethane. RC Airplanes that use electric power are run on motors instead of engines. The drawback of electric motors is that they are heavier than gas powered ones because of the batteries that go into them. This means that RC Airplanes that are built with electric motors need to be built with lighter materials.

RC Airplanes have many different types of models to choose from. Most beginner hobbyists choose a smaller model RTF (ready to fly) RC Airplane because they are easier to control and maintain. Most small RTF RC Airplanes are called park flyers because they are mainly designed as small planes to fly in parks or residential areas. They don't cost much, which is good news to a beginner because if they crash it, it won't take a lot out of their wallets like some larger RC Airplanes would.

In past years, the military has been getting in to using RC Airplanes to do intelligence work. RC Airplanes are used to fly over unknown territory to gather information through cameras attached to the bottom of the plane. They either transmit a video back to the base or take pictures of the area that it is flying over. RC Airplanes are being used for this type of operation not only because they are small and not easily spotted, but also because there is no loss of life if the plane is spotted during its flight.

There are millions of people who get into the hobby of model airplanes. Yet only some of them ever experience the excitement that comes with RC Airplanes. Airplanes are built to take flight in the air, so why not give model airplanes the satisfaction that real airplanes get every day. The wings are already on the RC Airplanes, so why not use them?
